Introduction - Finding My Voice Building My Community
Dear reader who stumbled here on purpose,
I’ve been thinking a lot about voice - how we find it, how we lose it, how we learn to trust it again. For a long time, I moved through life quietly, even while doing loud things. I was achieving, showing up, pushing forward, but I wasn’t always speaking from the deepest parts of myself. I didn’t realize how much I had to say until the words started pressing against me from the inside.
I didn’t start writing because I had extra time. I started writing because I finally realized that silence was costing me something. For years, I moved through medicine, research, mentorship, and life collecting stories, lessons, and truths that lived only in my head. I told myself I was too busy, too private, too focused on the next milestone to pause and share what I was learning along the way.
But the truth is this: I’ve always had a voice. I just had to grow the courage to use it.
This blog is the space I wish I had years ago - a place where someone was honest about the becoming, not just the outcome. A place where medicine, research, mentorship, and lifestyle could coexist without apology. A place where a Black woman in medicine could be brilliant and soft, ambitious and tired, disciplined and still figuring it out.
Blogging came to me slowly - in the quiet moments after rounds, in conversations with trainees who reminded me of my younger self, in the DMs from women who saw themselves in my journey, in the friends who said, “Fancy, you need to share this”. I realized that my story wasn’t just mine. It was part of a larger tapestry of women of color in medicine, first-generation scholars, daughters of the South, clinician-scientists, and women who are learning to hold softness and strength at the same time.
I’m writing because community shaped me. I’m writing because mentorship saved me. I’m writing because representation matters, not as a buzzword, but as a lifeline. I’m writing because I want to leave a trail for the women coming behind me - the ones who are learning to trust their own voice too! I’m writing because someone out there is navigating the same dualities I’ve had to learn to hold: brilliance and burnout, ambition and rest, confidence and doubt, purpose and pressure.
This blog is my way of opening the door a little wider.
Here, I’ll share the parts of my journey that don’t fit neatly into a caption: the medicine that moves me, the research that challenges me, the mentorship that grounds me, and the lifestyle that keeps me whole. I want this space to feel like a conversation, filled with honesty, warmth, and rooted in the belief that we become better when we learn from each other.
If you’re reading this, thank you for being here. Thank you for choosing to grow with me, question with me, and build community with me. Thank you for meeting me in this space where I can be both the doctor and the woman, the scientist and the storyteller. I’m excited for what we’ll create together.
Signed,
